Geologist -

State Geologist and Director of the State Geological Survey of Iowa, 1934-47 Born in Missouri, Trowbridge received his B.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He began teaching geology and related courses at the State University of Iowa (University of Iowa) in 1911. While he specialized in stratigraphy and sedimentation, he also wrote three manuals on how to teach geology in a laboratory setting. Trowbridge also studied sediment deposition of the Mississippi Delta while working for the U.S. Engineer Corps. Other projects on the Mississippi River included making geographical surveys for possible locks and dam locations. Trowbridge also aided in the international survey in Iraq and was a consultant to locate oil. From 1934 to 1947, Trowbridge became the head of the department and the director of the Iowa Geological Survey. After resigning, he devoted his time to teaching at the State University of Iowa until 1965.
