Born near Steamboat Rock, Herbert Quick taught near Mason City before becoming a lawyer in Sioux City. He served on the Federal Farm Loan Bureau in Washington, D.C. from 1916 to 1919. Despite these accomplishments, he is best known for his novels which take place in 19th century Iowa during the United States pioneer hay-day.
